Overview of Gastrointestinal System and Processes
There are several supplementary sources you can use to review anatomy and physiology information that is important to know to understand how GI medications work. Figure 7.1[1] illustrates the anatomical components of the gastrointestinal system. Links are provided below to the OpenStax Anatomy and Physiology book for further details regarding the following selected areas: overview of the digestive system, digestive system processes and regulation, the stomach, the small and large intestines, and chemical digestion and absorption. Box 7.2 contains links to supplementary videos further explaining the gastrointestinal system and digestive system. Medications related to hyperacidity, bowel disorders, and nausea and vomiting will be discussed in this chapter with reference to how they target pathophysiological concepts related to these organs and processes.
