Virtual Scenario

Instructions: Read the information below before beginning the activity. Then select the assigned client and complete all three virtual telehealth visits in order.

1. Read the client’s name, health condition, and background information.
2. Complete Visit 1, the post-hospitalization welcome call.
3. Complete Visit 2, during which the nurse identifies the client’s learning needs.
4. Complete Visit 3, during which the nurse evaluates the effectiveness of the health teaching provided.
5. During each visit, select the response you believe demonstrates the best therapeutic communication.
6. Review the immediate feedback and rationale provided after each response. Use this feedback to guide your decisions as you continue through the simulation.
7. Consider how the client’s cultural beliefs, geographical location, access to care, and other social determinants of health may affect the telehealth interaction.

These virtual, screen-based simulations demonstrate telehealth phone calls made by nurses to clients who were recently hospitalized and live in rural areas. It is assumed that the clients may not have Internet access and may experience barriers to accessing care because of their geographical location.

During each simulation, you will make decisions about how to use therapeutic communication to establish rapport and build trust with the client. You will also consider the potential impact of the client’s cultural beliefs and social determinants of health. Immediate feedback and a rationale are provided for both correct and incorrect responses as you progress through the simulation.
