Course Competency 1: Differentiate scopes of practice within the nursing profession

Learning Objectives:

  • Differentiate among levels of nursing education and scopes of practice, including the roles of LPNs, RNs, and UAPs
  • Identify the ethical and legal boundaries of the student nurse as outlined in the ANA Code of Ethics and Nurse Practice Act
  • Discuss behaviors and practices that support or violate client confidentiality, including HIPAA compliance
  • List the roles and contributions of healthcare team members and how nurses collaborate across disciplines
  • Explain how evidence-based practice contributes to quality patient care
  • Describe factors that contribute to quality in client care and how it influences patient outcomes and safety

Course Competency 2: Investigate elements of a safe care environment

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss safety considerations across the adult lifespan, including developmental stage, sensory and cognitive status, and environmental risks.
  • Summarize the purpose and importance of safety regulations and evidence-based practices in maintaining safe healthcare environments.
  • Describe how cultural, social, and individual factors influence perceptions and approaches to safety in healthcare.
  • Examine ethical, legal, and clinical factors that influence restraint use in patient care.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the principles and goals of therapeutic communication in nurse-patient interactions
  • Describe factors that influence how communication is adapted across diverse clients, interprofessional teams, and clinical situations
  • Describe characteristics of evidence-based resources used in nursing practice
  • Recognize commonly used medical terminology and abbreviations used in clinical communication.
  • Explain the purpose of structured communication tools in promoting patient safety
  • Summarize the importance of accurate and timely documentation in relation to legal and professional nursing standards
