Our Commitment to Accessibility
At WisTech Open, excellence in education includes excellence in access.
We are committed to designing and publishing open textbooks that empower a wide range of learners. Accessibility is embedded in our development process from concept through revision. We apply established best practices and strive to meet WCAG 2.2 Level AA standards, including the foundational WCAG 2.0 principles of making content perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust.
To support these requirements, WisTech Open develops materials with:
- Structured headings so learners using screen readers can navigate efficiently.
- Meaningful alternative text for images, charts, and figures.
- Properly formatted tables with clear headers.
- Descriptive links that explain their destination or purpose.
- Readable color contrast that does not rely on color alone to communicate meaning.
- Captions and/or transcripts for multimedia.
- Files designed for compatibility with assistive technologies such as screen readers, keyboard navigation, text-to-speech tools, and screen magnification software.
We also recognize that learners engage with content in different ways. Whenever possible, WisTech Open provides materials in multiple formats—including accessible digital editions, optional print textbooks, and optional audiobook versions—to support varied learning preferences and accessibility needs.
Our commitment is active and ongoing. WisTech Open regularly conducts accessibility audits and engages qualified accessibility professionals to evaluate and strengthen our materials. These reviews may include checking document structure, alternative text, color contrast, table accessibility, link clarity, keyboard navigation, multimedia accessibility, and compatibility with assistive technologies. We treat accessibility as a continuous quality improvement process—one that evolves alongside technology, standards, and the needs of the communities we serve.
We acknowledge that accessibility is not a fixed endpoint, and no resource is ever perfect. If you encounter a barrier or have suggestions for improvement, we welcome your feedback. Please contact us at wistechopen.org/contact. We are committed to responding promptly and to providing alternative access whenever possible.
At WisTech Open, accessibility is not simply compliance—it is part of our responsibility to expand opportunity through open education.
