8.1 Reproductive Concepts Introduction

Learning Objectives

  • Identify reproductive issues such as contraception, normal reproduction, reproductive screening, STIs, and fertility
  • Identify healthy male and female sexual development across the lifespan
  • Determine teaching concepts related to reproductive issues, including identification of community resources
  • Identify factors influencing client’s individual choices, such as culture, values, and religion
  • Identify gender and sexuality concepts, such as identity, expression, and attraction

This chapter will review the anatomy and physiology of the male and female reproductive systems, sexual development across the life span, reproduction and reproductive screening, fertility, contraception, sexually transmitted infections, and male and female reproductive disorders. Obtaining a comprehensive gynecological history is discussed, and the nursing process is applied to caring for a client with a reproductive problem.
