8.1 Reproductive Concepts Introduction

Learning Objectives

  • Describe healthy male and female sexual development across the life span
  • Discuss reproductive issues such as contraception, normal reproduction, reproductive screening, sexually transmitted infections, and fertility
  • Identify teaching concepts related to reproductive issues, including identification of community resources
  • Discuss concepts related to gender and sexuality, such as gender identity, gender expression, gender dysphoria, and sexual orientation
  • Consider factors influencing a client’s individual choices, such as culture, values, and religion

This chapter will review the anatomy and physiology of the male and female reproductive systems, sexual development across the life span, reproduction and reproductive screening, fertility, contraception, sexually transmitted infections, and male and female reproductive disorders. Obtaining a comprehensive gynecological history is discussed, and the nursing process is applied to caring for a client with a reproductive problem.
