  • Identify factors influencing client’s individual choices, such as culture, values, and religion
  • Use food safety guidelines to prevent contamination and food-borne illnesses

Nurses play an important role in educating clients about good nutrition and healthy diet choices. A nutritious diet maintains health and prevents disease. For example, diet is a modifiable risk factor for many chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Adequate nutrition is also an important component of the recovery process from illness and surgery.
