Caring for pregnant women and their families is a multifaceted process that encompasses physical, emotional, and psychological aspects to ensure the health and well-being of both the mother and the newborn. Tailoring care to the unique needs and preferences of each client and their family is essential for a healthy pregnancy and childbirth. A family-centered approach involves partners and family members in prenatal and postpartum care and provides health teaching and support to all family members. This chapter will discuss several topics, including preconception care; diagnosis of pregnancy; anatomical, physiological, and psychological changes during pregnancy; common pregnancy discomforts; barriers to effective prenatal care; the first prenatal visit; first, second, and third trimester care; perinatal education; and family adaptation to pregnancy.
