Learning Objectives

  • Describe the major chemical components
  • Correlate components according to structure, function, and the role major chemical components play in body composition
  • Use appropriate terminology
  • Compare the structure of DNA, RNA, and proteins

Understanding the basics of chemistry is the first step in understanding the human body. Elements form the carbohydrates, nucleotides, proteins, and lipids (all of which will be defined later in this chapter) that are the basic building blocks of all organisms. This chapter will discuss these important building blocks and how the unique properties of the atoms of different elements work with other atoms to form the molecules of life.
