2 16.2 Functions of the Reproductive System

Functions of the Reproductive System

The major functions of the reproductive system are regulating sexual development and producing offspring to ensure survival of the species. These functions include producing hormones, creating and transporting reproductive cells (sperm and eggs), and, in females, nurturing a developing fetus during pregnancy.[1]

The structures and specific functions of the male and female reproductive systems are described in more detail in the following sections.
